- Abstract
- This study investigates how women in contemporary Sweden experience contraceptives through the lens of biopolitics and biopower. Using qualitative methods, the study explores the paradox of freedom that contraceptives represent for women. While providing sexual liberation and control over reproduction, contraceptives also impose societal expectations and self-surveillance. Women navigate between the benefits of controlling menstruation and the fears associated with hormonal and physical interventions. The study reveals a tension between the perceived autonomy over reproductive choices and the underlying biopolitical influences that subtly govern these decisions.
