Abstract
Problematic school absenteeism and homebound students have over the years become a great problem in society. Research indicates that both causes for absenteeism and the path back to school are complex. Early detection is crucial to enable students to return to school. What do homebound students say about their situation? In this study, we aimed to explore the perspective of homebound students and attempted to understand what they are trying to communicate. Therefore, we chose to conduct a qualitative study where we analyzed six different podcasts. These podcasts consist of six different interviews with students who have been homebound themselves. We aimed to discover what these individuals, who have chosen to speak out in the media, want to tell society. The main object of this study was to examine how homebound students perceive themselves and their well-being, how they view their relationships with teachers, and what they want to mediate to society through podcasts. The analysis used a relational perspective and the concept of shame as a theoretical starting point. From the results, we drew several conclusions. To begin with, it is clear that students have a negative view of themselves where shame is a prominent feeling. Relationships with teachers were highlighted as crucial for students returning to school and a common thread in the students' voices was the experience of excessive demands. Too much focus on results and less on their actual well-being were commonly experienced. (Less)
