Abstract
The aim of this study is to identify perceptions, gender stereotypes and stigmatization surrounding female substance abusers on the internet forum Flashback. Sweden is often lauded as one of the most gender-equal countries in the world. Despite this, there are gender equality issues that can be traced to how men and women are treated differently in society. This also applies to perceptions of substance abuse. Expectations and attitudes towards women versus men regarding the use of drugs and alcohol vary significantly. We chose to have a qualitative approach and our study utilizes the internet forum Flashback, as it provides a platform where free expression of topics and thoughts is encouraged without political or societal constraints.... We chose to have a qualitative approach and our study utilizes the internet forum Flashback, as it provides a platform where free expression of topics and thoughts is encouraged without political or societal constraints. Moreover, the threads on Flashback could be compared to how the media portrays female and male substance abusers. By using Butler's theory of gender and Goffman's theory of stigma, the study identified clear patterns of perceptions, gender stereotypes and stigmatization related to female substance abusers. Furthermore, the study showed distinct differences between the female addict compared to the male gender and the stereotypical woman. Additionally, our results indicate that strict traditional norms regarding women's drug and alcohol consumption still persist, including a low acceptance of women's drinking. The study found that the female substance abuser was placed at a lower societal level compared to the opposite gender. (Less)
