Abstract
Both positive and negative aspects in the workplace contribute to job satisfaction. The workplace is described both as a health factor as well as a place where lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals may face harassment such as microaggressions and incivility. The aim of this mixed methods study was to explore relationships in the workplace from two perspectives. First, quantitatively examine how relationships with one’s colleagues and supervisors are associated with how LGBTQ individuals perceive their work situation as a whole. Second, qualitatively explore how support within these relationships is described in a context of minority stress. The sample consisted of 1925 participants between the ages of 18–74 (M =... (More)

The sample consisted of 1925 participants between the ages of 18–74 (M = 38.2) who responded to a digital survey. This survey generated both quantitative and qualitative data that were analyzed separately. The quantitative results suggested small differences between people with trans experiences and heterosexual cisgender people in reported job satisfaction and positive and negative aspects of the social work environment. People with trans experiences seemed to be less satisfied with their workplace. The results also showed that satisfaction with the relationship with one’s manager and colleagues had the strongest association with job satisfaction. The qualitative results illustrated how support, which can occur in these relationships, can have passive, active and general forms and may be expressed in situations of harassment or as accepting and affirming attitudes toward LGBTQ people. In conclusion, colleagues and, most importantly, managers seem to have an important role in creating a positive work environment for LGBTQ individuals. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
