Abstract
The impact prostitution has on women's lives is complex and seldom positive. The purpose of this study is to broaden the knowledge of how women's identities are affected by prostitution. Through narrative analysis of these stories, and with a theoretical framework on roles, identity, and gender, we found common factors that affected these women's identities. The dominant factors were those of the roles they had to perform during prostitution, the shame associated with being a prostitute, and that of self-loathing. The majority of the women questioned their existence. The... (More)

The majority of the women questioned their existence. The result of the study shows that these factors caused a discrepancy in the women's identities and made it difficult for them to construct healthy identities, both during and after exiting prostitution.
