Abstract
Media holds an irreplaceable role in liberal Western democracies as it assumes core democratic functions such as disseminating information, representing public interests and taking on the role of a watchdog. In relation to the rise of populist radical right parties, research has revealed that media holds a crucial role. Hence, within the context of the rise of the populist radical right party Sweden Democrats, this project aims to analyse the online national news presentation of that party in relation to the Social Democratic and Moderate Party in Sweden. For that two dimensions are considered, firstly changes between the elections in 2018 and 2022 are compared and secondly, variations, across state-financed, broadsheet, and tabloid news... (More)

Hence, within the context of the rise of the populist radical right party Sweden Democrats, this project aims to analyse the online national news presentation of that party in relation to the Social Democratic and Moderate Party in Sweden. For that two dimensions are considered, firstly changes between the elections in 2018 and 2022 are compared and secondly, variations, across state-financed, broadsheet, and tabloid news are investigated.
By utilising the theory of framing, the core concept of media presentation is analysed regarding the societal relevant topics of immigration and law & order and the sentiments associated with the parties. The three dimensions are operationalised utilising natural language processing techniques, namely applying a sentiment model and employing topic classifications to construct a dictionary to identify the topics.
The results indicate that the topic of immigration is particularly associated with the Sweden Democrats, whereas the topic of law & order is mainly connected to the Moderate Party both throughout elections and newspaper types. Concerning sentiments, the Sweden Democrats are framed as the most negative, and least positive compared to the other parties. Finally, the findings suggest that this difference in presentation is particularly pronounced in tabloid newspapers and the least in state-financed news. (Less)
