- Abstract (Swedish)
- Intrauterine fetal death, where nearly 400 infants die in utero each year in Sweden, has a profound impact on the mother and her life. It is difficult for her to return to everyday life after the loss, and how she is received in her role as a mother to a stillborn child is complex. Although healthcare has good research, further studies are needed to understand the extent of needs and experiences of support in this trauma. Additionally, awareness of the phenomenon among the community and other societal actors is limited.

This study has explored mothers needs for support and the significance of support in cases of intrauterine fetal death. Drawing from my experience as a healthcare curator, I have examined the dynamics of support in various contexts mothers come into contact with. The method used is semi-structured interviews with a total of seven participating mothers to stillborn babies. The results describe both negative and positive experiences from a wide range of contexts to provide a comprehensive picture of mothers' need for support and the experiences of the significance of support. I found that a crucial role in mitigating grief is played by proactive and person-centered support, where the need for emotional presence, affirmation of the child's existence, and community with other parents are primary needs that need to be met.
