Abstract
Cities worldwide face unprecedented challenges, demanding innovative approaches to sustainable urban development. The imperative for cities to be dense and green poses significant challenges in urban planning, underscoring the need to understand how these goals interact. This study examines the dense and green city vision in Malmö's planning documents through critical discourse analysis, focusing on dominant discourses, underlying interests, and socio-environmental implications. While strategic documents promote the dense and green city as a sustainable solution, local conflicts and compromises often arise, influenced by hegemonic discourses rooted in economic rationalism. Marginalized communities bear the burden, facing increased vulnerability, while ecological consequences worsen climate vulnerabilities. Addressing these conflicts in planning documents and prioritizing urban greenery in decision-making is crucial for achieving socially just and environmentally sound urban environments. This requires political acknowledgment of the intertwined nature of urban discourses and early-stage planning interventions to prioritize environmental preservation and social justice alongside economic interests.
