- Abstract
- In this master's thesis, my main objective is to broaden the understanding of early Franciscan spirituality. I achieve this by utilizing the sermons of Anthony of Padua as a source. By studying his sermons, we gain a deeper understanding of his thoughts. The research question of the thesis is: What is Anthony's perspective on poverty and wisdom based on his sermons? These two aspects of Antonian spirituality are chosen because they represent two facets of Franciscan spirituality that underwent significant changes during the early decades of the Order. In this thesis, I conducted word searches on the compiled sermon corpus and then selected four sermons, two for each aspect of Anthony’s spirituality, which I then closely read, structured,... (More)

These two aspects of Antonian spirituality are chosen because they represent two facets of Franciscan spirituality that underwent significant changes during the early decades of the Order. In this thesis, I conducted word searches on the compiled sermon corpus and then selected four sermons, two for each aspect of Anthony’s spirituality, which I then closely read, structured, investigated, analysed, and discussed. The main conclusions of this thesis are that Anthony primarily understands poverty as selfimposed poverty. It is an expression of a life of penance and is closely linked to humility. He sets up an antithesis between those who live according to voluntary poverty and those who love temporal things. Those who love temporal things reject God, and God rejects them. Through his sermons, Anthony also expresses strong social criticism of the rich who mistreat the poor. Anthony sees Christ as the Father's wisdom, and this wisdom is strongly linked to Anthony's Christology overall. He distinguishes between the wisdom of the Spirit and the wisdom of the world. The wisdom of the Spirit is a wisdom that the penitent cultivates and that is perfected by God's grace. The wisdom of the world concerns flesh and blood, that is in Anthony’s understanding, nourishing the flesh and acquiring money. Wisdom, for Anthony, is situated in a discourse of struggle where the penitent and righteous person stands on one side and the demons stand on the other. Through this struggle, individuals can mature into a more virtuous life and become more resilient against the attacks of the enemy. St. Stephen emerges as the model figure in this struggle. Finally, wisdom is an agent of salvation that deceives the Devil on the cross and searches on earth and beneath it for Adam's descendants to bring them home to himself. (Less)
