- Abstract
- This study aims to highlight the practical work and experiences of an organization working for Roma rights and inclusion in southern Sweden. Through semi-structured interviews with the agents of CRS (Center Roma South), this study strives for a deeper understanding of the organizations work, needs, and experiences with the Roma population in southern Sweden. The questions to be answered through this study mainly concern how the organization works with Roma and what needs they identify in working with this group. The empirical data used in this study largely emanates from semi-structured interviews, but also from governmental reports, relevant literature, scientific articles, studies, and journals. The theoretical framework used to analyze the submitted data is based on post-colonial theory and intersectional theory. The choice of using this kind of qualitative method stems from the way such a method emphasizes the significance of individual, complex, and profound data which is suitable following the studies' nature and framing of questions. Some former studies on the topic have shown that the results of different interventions in Sweden aimed at Roma populations sometimes have negative or no significant outcomes. According to other studies, work and interventions aimed at helping Roma are constantly met with obstacles through mistrust as a result of historical discrimination and state-funded human rights violations against the group. The empirical data and analysis of this study stresses the need for discursive and long-term interventions to overcome the consequences of discrimination which to this day frames and affects the Roma population negatively. The study also shows how the organization, through its working method involving individual, structural, and discursive perspectives, tries to navigate inclusive and educational work with Roma in a society where they are frequently discriminated against. The result of this study is important as its findings can be used as a basis for future work methods focusing on Roma. Furthermore, the results of the study could, in a deepened discussion, implicate changes in social work policy. (Less)
