- Abstract
- Design-forward portable lighting was introduced during the 2010’s, and has since solidified its presence and popularity. Made visible through restaurants and hotels it has grown into an attractive section of the lighting market. Through the flexibility of the cordless lamp, new creative design solutions have been achieved, and most design-forward companies include them in their range.

Lighting design taps into many different fields of knowledge, not only does lighting have a rich history in the way it has been used by humans, it also has a strong connection to human psychology. Further, the very existence of lighting design depends on the technology we’ve developed in the form of power- and light sources. These many juxtaposing elements can be implemented into the design of luminaries, creating an interesting basis to work from.
This thesis has aimed to explore lighting design within the realm of cordless lighting. The main focus has been on the possibilities of cordless ceiling and wall mounted lighting, created with restaurants in mind.
The result is REY, a lighting series aimed towards small scale restaurants with a desire to create a seamless and ambient lighting environment for their guests. It provides flexibility and can with ease bring light to alternative spaces. (Less)
