Therefore, twelve middle managers in Swedish social services have been interviewed about their leadership role. The aim has been to generate knowledge about how social service first-line managers express their leadership and how they experience their leadership role in relation to their middle management position. What has emerged in the study is that the middle managers in social services express different leadership styles, and what they express is closely linked to the essence of social work. They focus on teamwork with co-workers and on close client work. The context of leadership taking place in a street-level bureaucracy thus seems to be important. (Less)
