Abstract
Environmental pollution caused by human activity is one of today's biggest dilemmas. Pollution in air, water and soil can pose risks to human health and the environment and can lead to a reduction in available resources. Investigating and remediating contaminated areas is therefore an important task. In the past 20 years, there have been two major spills of gasoline and diesel at the Energy Port of Gothenburg, Sweden. Cleanup measures were carried out and a groundwater monitoring program was established. Over time, contaminants consisting of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons have been detected in groundwater that exceed guideline values. Therefore, there is a need to evaluate the contaminated site and the possibility of further... (More)

Therefore, there is a need to evaluate the contaminated site and the possibility of further remediation. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the current situation at the site and how it has changed since the spills occurred, in order to discuss appropriate remediation methods. This was achieved through sampling of soil and groundwater, analysis of chemical data and mapping of the contaminated area. This study shows that there are contaminants in soil that exceed guideline values for aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. There is also contamination in groundwater, but in concentrations below the guideline values. Since the spills occurred, the levels of hydrocarbons and the spatial distribution of the polluted area have decreased. Today, the distribution of pollution is relatively limited within the investigated area at a depth of 1–2 meters. There are hydrocarbons in the ground probably due to inhabitation of biological degradation processes and the geological conditions of the site. Since contamination is present in the soil and exceeds guideline values, there is reason to remediate the site further. Three possible remediation methods have been discussed within the work: phytoremediation, bioremediation and chemical oxidation, where bioremediation has been identified as the most suitable and sustainable option. (Less)
