Abstract
The dirt and miasma of the city: Medical knowledge and the prevention of cholera on a regional and national level during the cholera outbreaks of the 1850s

The dirt and miasma of the city: Medical knowledge and the prevention of cholera on a
regional and national level during the cholera outbreaks of the 1850s. This thesis aims to
analyze and understand the relation between medical knowledge regarding cholera on the
regional and national level during the 1854–1855 and 1857–1858 cholera outbreaks. This is
done by analyzing source material, related to cholera, from the health board of Lund during
the chosen time period. This regional material will in turn be compared to the journal of the

regional and national level during the 1854–1855 and 1857–1858 cholera outbreaks. This is
done by analyzing source material, related to cholera, from the health board of Lund during
the chosen time period. This regional material will in turn be compared to the journal of the
Swedish Medical Association Hygiea, which will represent cholera knowledge on a national
level. One part of understanding the relation between regional and national knowledge is the
theoretical understanding of how knowledge circulates, what knowledge circulates and how
this movement shapes the knowledge. This thesis applies a theory of knowledge circulation,
regional theory and microhistory to understand just these questions.
This thesis has shown that specific knowledge, regarding cholera, existed in the region Lund
and on the national level through Hygiea, which primarily consisted of knowledge about how
cholera spreads, how to stop its spread and how to treat cholera. It has also been shown that
the region and nation are coherent in their knowledge, while there exists certain differences
related to the needs on a regional and national level. The national level also has a larger
access to knowledge than the region, seen primarily in the references to international
literature. Lastly a knowledge circulation of the aforementioned knowledge has been shown
on a regional and national level, where both levels show evidence of being connected to
larger knowledge circulations. (Less)
