- Abstract
- In 2015 Sweden received a substantial amount of refugees from the Middle East compared to other European countries, which caused debate concerning Sweden's refugee politics. Some political parties wanted to focus on helping in the nearby area instead of the refugees coming to Sweden. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 refugees fled to Sweden again. The discussions throughout the society at this time were that all Ukrainians were welcome. Therefore, the study aims to analyze how politicians from the Swedish parliament parties speak about refugees and how current and historical events influence the use of language over time. Through critical discourse analysis, we have read transcribed documents from debates in the parliament about refugees... (More)

The discussions throughout the society at this time were that all Ukrainians were welcome. Therefore, the study aims to analyze how politicians from the Swedish parliament parties speak about refugees and how current and historical events influence the use of language over time. Through critical discourse analysis, we have read transcribed documents from debates in the parliament about refugees from 2002, 2015, and 2022.
Furthermore, we have examined the language using Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model, which consists of analyzing the language, discourse practice, and social practice. The conclusions of the study show three prominent discourses: solidarity/humanity, strict refugee politics, and distinction of refugees. The discourses were found in all periods. Additionally, the parties talked more highly about the Ukrainian refugees compared to refugees from the Middle East, concerning culture, economy, and safety. Aspects that affected these discourses were whether the country which the refugees fled from was nearby or far away, if the receiving country saw the conflict as a common threat and if the refugees could easily integrate with society.
