Abstract
This study aimed to research the phenomenon of contact tracing of sexually transmitted infections through the perspective of healthcare social workers. The research questions were what competencies could contribute to a satisfactory contact tracing and whether these competencies corresponded to those the health care social worker typically has. This was researched using a qualitative research method and semi-structured interviews with healthcare social workers who worked with contact tracing regularly. The concepts used to analyze the data were empathy, room for action, alliance, and stigma. The results showed that contact tracing required several competencies and that some of them were regarded as necessary to get the contact tracing done... (More)
This study aimed to research the phenomenon of contact tracing of sexually transmitted infections through the perspective of healthcare social workers. The results showed that contact tracing required several competencies and that some of them were regarded as necessary to get the contact tracing done satisfactorily. The competencies were how to ally, how to lead the conversation, how to handle different emotions, and ethical competence. The study showed that the majority of the informants had not received any education on these competencies even though they were regarded as very important. Except for these competencies, dedication, and engagement were also found to be an important factor in the work with contact tracing. In general, the competencies that were found corresponded with those that the health care social worker typically has which in these cases made up for the lack of education. The study also found challenges in being a healthcare social worker working with contact tracing. One challenge was going from being supportive to more strict with the patients who did not want to cooperate. This was a challenge that later was discussed as one that could become more and more relevant as testing, treatment, and contact tracing have become more and more readily available which made the experience of patients being nonchalant more common.
