Abstract
This thesis posits that the 1948 mermaid film Miranda, made in the United Kingdom is an example of a pivotal moment, or series of moments, in mermaid image history. Through Aby Warburg’s method of the Bilderatlas, the thesis will identify and map out how Miranda connects with surviving mermaid images and created new image types that are now prevalent within modern mermaid images. Through this mapping process and the theory of agency, I will analyse how the images types represented in the films reflect the agency, or lack thereof, of the mermaids Miranda and Lenore in the 1948 American film Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid. This comparison will support the intricacies that establish Miranda as a unique and rich source of mimetic mermaid image... (More)

This comparison will support the intricacies that establish Miranda as a unique and rich source of mimetic mermaid image history. Two questions will be answered through the methods of comparative and visual discourse analysis and the process of identifying similar themes and motifs in the mermaid images: How can the concept of female agency in Miranda be understood in different mermaid image types; and; What old and new mermaid image types can be identified and categorised in the film Miranda?
