Remittances and Household Welfare in Morocco: a Propensity Score Matching approach

This thesis explores the impact of international remittances on household welfare in Morocco using a Propensity Score Matching approach. The purpose of the study is to assess the causal effect of these financial inflows on household expenditure, specifically on essential and temptation goods. Utilising national survey data, I find that households receiving remittances show a substantial increase in expenditure on essential goods, which supports the consumption-smoothing hypothesis. Conversely, there is also an observed increase in expenditure on temptation goods, challenging the notion that remittances solely lead to beneficial economic outcomes.
