Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to comparatively map, systematically present and analytically discuss leading policy ideas articulated by the two nationalist/national conservative/populist parliamentary parties in Estonia, Isamaa and EKRE, in the run-up to the 2024 European Parliament elections. The aim of this thesis is to comparatively map, systematically present and analytically discuss leading policy ideas articulated by the two nationalist/national conservative/populist parliamentary parties in Estonia, Isamaa and EKRE, in the run-up to the 2024 European Parliament elections. A special focus is oriented towards leading ideas and messages that are of great relevance and timeliness in the context of Estonia's active participation in EU co-operation and the war in Ukraine. The material from which the political message is taken is official party programmes. This analysis is conducted by utilizing the method comparative descriptive idea analysis, which in this study is methodologically joined with a semantic thematic analysis. The thesis is utilizing Cas Mudde, among others, theories to conceptualize the ideological components of right-wing populism and radical-right populism. The findings in the thesis shows that Ekre's leading ideas are characterised by nationalist, conservative, hard Eurosceptic, radical right, populist and nativist currents of thought. Isamaa's leading ideas are characterised by nationalist, conservative, soft Eurosceptic, neoliberal, pro-European, anti-authoritarian and nativist ideological currents, among others. In the two contexts of Estonia's active participation in EU co-operation and the war in Ukraine, there are both similarities and differences between the parties' leading ideas. (Less)
