- Abstract
- This study aims to examine the attitudes regarding cannabis among Swedish and international students at Lund University. The study has used semi structured interviews to collect data, in order to answer the questions. The collected data have been analyzed using Ellickson’s social control theory as well as the theory about legal consciousness developed by Ewick and Silbey.
The results show that Swedish and international students at Lund University have similar attitudes towards cannabis, even though the international students have a somewhat more positive view. International students at Lund University also show a lower awareness of the Swedish legislation regarding cannabis compared to Swedish students. Furthermore the study shows that... Furthermore the study shows that both international and Swedish students’ opinions differ from the current law, and that many consider that a legalization of cannabis in Sweden should be investigated. The main argument for this is harm reduction. However many Swedish students would prefer the cannabis market to be regulated by the state.
First party control is the most prevalent form of control used to regulate cannabis use among students at Lund University. Some students would use other forms of control as well, even though this seems to be less common. Cannabis use can be seen as self regulated in the student community in Lund and few to none would take legal action against people using it recreationally. (Less)
