- This essay analyzes the Swedish political party Sverigedemokraterna and the German political party Alternative für Deutschland which is relevant as these parties are gaining success across Europe and European Union citizens will soon vote in the European Parliament elections. By using a thematic descriptive idea analysis of their party programs, this thesis explores the similarities and differences between the parties and their views on European integration within four themes: federalism, nation/national identity, economy and geopolitical security. The comparative analysis is carried out using the theories of euroscepticism, nationalism, conservatism and right-wing populism within the framework of European integration. The findings in this study indicate that both parties cherish the nation state, find the principle of subsidiarity fundamental and want the EU to decide on fewer topics, leading to the return of power to the nation state. However, the parties want to achieve this by reforming the EU in different ways. Moreover, the paper mainly identifies differences in the themes, economy and geopolitical security. The main difference discovered in the analysis, is that Sverigedemokraterna are generally more soft eurosceptics, while the Alternative für Deutschland is more of a hard eurosceptic party. (Less)
