Abstract
This master thesis analyzes the discourse of material in the newspaper LO-tidningen (later called Arbetet), with a particular focus on editorials. Trade unions have played an important historical role in Sweden. Drawing upon research that shows that the public discourse as a whole have become more influenced by neoliberal thought, this thesis focuses on whether the unions themselves have been affected by this societal change or not.

Material in the form of editorials from the decade 1980s are randomly chosen and compared to randomly chosen editorials from the 2010s. The research question of the master thesis is:

Have LO´s political discourse become more influenced by neoliberalism since the 1980s?

Have LO´s political discourse become more influenced by neoliberalism since the 1980s?

The editorials are analyzed in the thesis by utilizing discourse analysis and ideal type analysis. A thorough operationalization is provided to accompany the ideal type analysis, in the form of Snow and Benford’s analytical tool called frame analysis.

The results shows that LO:s political discourse already was influenced by neoliberal discourse in the 1980s, and that the change compared to the 2010s are small or marginal. (Less)
