Robust Extraction of Respiratory Signals from ECG

- Abstract
- Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common supraventricular tachyarrhythmias. With an aging population and the increasing prevalence of atrial fibrillation worldwide, reliable and continuous monitoring systems that can capture respiratory information under varying medical conditions are needed. This study investigates and compares respiration signal extraction methods derived from electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The performance of fifteen ECG-derived respiration (EDR) signal extraction methods was compared using ECG signals with normal sinus rhythm (NSR) and atrial fibrillation (AF). The evaluated performance of the methods was based on analyzing the wave morphology, peak-interval correlation, and respiratory rates derived from the ECG... (More)

The evaluated performance of the methods was based on analyzing the wave morphology, peak-interval correlation, and respiratory rates derived from the ECG signals in comparison to a reference respiratory signal. A dataset with 20-minute recordings for 14 subjects with NSR and 19 subjects with AF was used for evaluation. The results imply that there is variability across different EDR signals as well as their respective performance during AF and NSR. Based on the waveform similarity, the algorithm that performed best on each type of rhythm was the RR interval for NSR, with a median value of approximately 0.8, whereas the area between two consecutive Q-waves for AF, with a median value of 0.4. However, it was concluded that the most robust extraction algorithms were R-to-S-Wave amplitude, R-to-Q-wave amplitude, and central moment of the RS segment due to consistent and reliable performance across both NSR and AF.
(Less)
