This qualitative study examines the experiences of particularly vulnerable girls affected by child marriage and prostitution in Kenya, with the aim of exploring how social control mechanisms and gender inequality perpetuate these harmful practices. By using a thematic analysis approach within the theoretical framework of social control theory, primary and secondary deviance and dominance theory, the study presents empirical data collected through seven in-depth interviews from Kenya's capital, Nairobi. All participants were women affiliated with Kenyan organisations dedicated to rescuing and empowering women and children. Findings conclude that five overarching themes could be identified in the data, where gender based discrimination, poverty, social norms, distrust for the government and progressive work, were central for answering the research questions. Through an in-depth exploration of these themes, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of arranged marriages and prostitution in addition to how laws, culture and social control impact Kenya on a macro-meso and micro level. The findings highlights the urgent need for further interventions aimed at addressing the root causes of child marriage and prostitution in Kenya, in addition to combating gender inequality. (Less)
