- Abstract
- Thanks to technological advances, AI has advanced to areas previously thought to only be performed by humans. By imitating human cognitive ability, AIs are having a growing impact on medical practice, where the rapid development of data analysis tools is contributing to a significant change in healthcare. The potential for AI in healthcare is vast. However, AI can offer both ethical and human rights challenges.
Purpose: This study aims to discover doctoral students' perceptions of the integration of AI and how this may affect people's ability to live dignified lives. Purpose: This study aims to discover doctoral students' perceptions of the integration of AI and how this may affect people's ability to live dignified lives. Through the lens of the framework of Nussbaum's capabilities approach, contextual integrity and technology as a capability, the purpose of this study is to make the risks and opportunities AI can offer visible. It is essential to explore this to ensure that AI's opportunities do not trump individuals' capacities and restrict human rights.
Method: This study takes a qualitative approach. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted and coded based on a qualitative content analysis.
Conclusion: The analysis of the empirical material shows that AI in healthcare can have both a fertile and corrosive function for the patients' and doctors' capacities, as it can undermine capacities if implemented incorrectly. The analysis shows, among others, that AI can make healthcare more efficient and grant more time for the doctor to spend with the patient. However, if implemented incorrectly, it can undermine the doctor's critical thinking, the patient's emotional support, and the capability of affiliation, and it can violate the patient's right to privacy.
