Abstract
This bachelor's thesis explores how users engage with political content on TikTok concerning
monetized filters to the benefit of Palestine. It also investigates the role TikTok may play in
facilitating political mobilization and advocacy, as well as how users leverage the platform to
organize, collaborate, and amplify their voices around political issues. The two main methods of
research are non-participatory observation and qualitative content analysis. By utilizing
Milbrath’s hierarchy of political participation, the following study reveals a spectrum of engagement on low-to-medium levels, shedding light on TikTok as a space for expressing
opinions, engaging in discourse, and advocating political issues.
Analysis suggests that... (More)

Milbrath’s hierarchy of political participation, the following study reveals a spectrum of engagement on low-to-medium levels, shedding light on TikTok as a space for expressing
opinions, engaging in discourse, and advocating political issues.
Analysis suggests that controversy and novelty surrounding filters can elicit ideological reactions as well as stimulate engagement. This underscores TikTok’s potential as a dynamic arena for political expression. However, users express plenty of skepticism regarding the transparency of donation processes and creators’ intentions. This highlights the importance of maintaining clarity and trust with one’s audience when advocating for a political cause on TikTok. Through
connective action, users leverage TikTok’s innate features to coordinate efforts and amplify collective impact, which fosters diverse dialogue between individuals and raises awareness of humanitarian issues. The short-form video content on the app encourages creative expression and makes political content more accessible, especially considering the younger demographics of the platform. Furthermore, personal action frames enable users to tailor their engagement based on personal beliefs, emphasizing individual pathways to action. Users also self-organize and
collaborate to increase visibility and effectiveness in supporting the Palestinian cause. TikTok thus emerges as a space for empowerment, democratizing political participation, and amplifying marginalized voices. Overall, this reflects the transformative potential of social media platforms.
