The role changes within the role perceptions are examined in a changing global security environment. The study finds that the debate and role surrounding neutrality and military non-alignment in Sweden have evolved due to changing security policy conditions. EU membership comes from the end of the Cold War and the politicians ́ agreement on its compatibility with the security policy line, while the Nato membership follows the Russian threat which causes Sweden to break with the long tradition of military non-alignment.
