This paper tries to understand the relationship between mobile money and financial literacy, and further down examines whether any potential relationship would also imply a causal effect by mobile money on financial literacy. The analysis is done in the context of Kenya, a pioneer in mobile money with its implementation of M-Pesa drastically changing the economic climate in the country. The relationship is established through the use of an ordinary least squares estimation and is followed by an instrumental variable approach that together with an extensive literature review tries to establish the causal relationship. The study finds a positive correlation between mobile money and financial literacy, with weaker evidence from the instrumental variable approach suggesting the same. Through the literature review, a few channels are established through which mobile money affects financial literacy, such as increased exposure to financial instruments. (Less)
