- Abstract
- This thesis explores the role of institutional structures and farming practices in enhancing food security and resilience in Sweden, particularly in the context of crisis preparedness. Using institutional theory with a focus on DiMaggio and Powell's concept of institutional isomorphism, the study examines how Swedish authorities in the food sector respond to both formal and informal pressures when developing crisis management strategies. A particular focus is placed on the comparison between conventional and ecological farming practices and their contributions to long-term resilience.

A particular focus is placed on the comparison between conventional and ecological farming practices and their contributions to long-term resilience.
The findings, based on a qualitative content analysis of policy documents from key Swedish institutions, reveal that institutional isomorphism leads to the standardization of crisis management, which enhances coordination but can also limit innovation and flexibility in unforeseen crises. Ecological farming, while yielding lower immediate outputs, supports resilience by promoting biodiversity, reducing dependency on imported inputs, and fostering sustainable land use. The study concludes by recommending a balanced integration of both conventional and ecological farming methods to create a robust and resilient food system in Sweden. This integration is crucial for effective crisis preparedness and sustainable food security in the face of future uncertainties. (Less)
