- Abstract (Swedish)
- This thesis examines transatlantic recusity relations in the context of Russias war in Ukraine. The study examines how the European Union and the United States have responded to Russian aggression in Ukraine, focusing on two phases of the conflict: the Russian annexation of Crimea 2014 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine 2022. The study asks if the EU and US have been unified in their approaches and policies towards Russia, and how transatlantic cooperation differs between 2014 and 2021/2022. In the 2014 response, the practical implementation of EU and US response differed in terms of the intensity and scope of their sanctions. The US imposed more immediate, comprehensive and aggressive sanctions, covering several key sectors of the Russian economy, EU sanctions policy showed a more restrictive, cautious and gradual approach, aimed to balance political pressure with economic considerations and maintain trade and diplomatic channels with Russia. The EU's sanctions policy reflects the member states' interests and economic dependence and oil dependency on Russia, which made them less inclined to adopt tougher sanctions. Responding to the Russian invasion in 2022, the EU acted quickly and uniformly, imposing extensive sanctions, similar to those imposed by the US. The 2022 invasion is believed to have created a turning point in the EU-US relationship, reviving transatlantic unity after decades of increased division and decreased cooperation. (Less)
