Abstract
This essay examines museum workers' perspectives on gender integration in exhibition creation. Museums hold a unique position of power in shaping cultural heritage, making it highly relevant to examine museums' actual praxis in exhibition creation. If history is presented without analysing it through a gender perspective, it risks perpetuating outdated and harmful gender patterns. Working with gender integration is a way to prevent this, but how do museum workers themselves view gender integration in exhibition creation, and what tools do they use to facilitate gender integration? Bringing awareness to museum workers' opinions and processes related to gender integration allows us to make concrete and supportive decisions towards the goal... (More)
This essay examines museum workers' perspectives on gender integration in exhibition creation. Bringing awareness to museum workers' opinions and processes related to gender integration allows us to make concrete and supportive decisions towards the goal of achieving a more gender-integrated museum operation.
To answer the questions given above, the study uses empirical data consisting of interviews and observations. The data is analysed through a social constructivist perspective. This perspective is utilized to deconstruct phenomena that are accepted and initially may seem natural, and then replace them with an aspect that acknowledges that these phenomena are in fact socially constructed.
The museum's interest in the gender perspective, combined with its already established working methods, shows that the museum has made significant progress in its gender integration efforts. However, there is still some discrepancy between the rhetoric and the practice regarding how much space the gender perspective can or should occupy. The interviews conducted clearly indicate an interest in working towards gender integration. Furthermore, an analysis of the workshops reveals that reality does not entirely match what the interviewees would likely have preferred. Nevertheless, many valuable tools for gender integration can be identified from the interviews when they discussed their previous experiences. (Less)
