Abstract
Social media has become a powerful tool in modern society, influencing people's views, attitudes, and outlooks on life. This study looks at the importance of social media on the cultural identities of Somali immigrants in Sweden as well as it also looks at whether social media helps or hinders the integration process viewed from a first-person perspective. Participant's perceptions of culture and belonging are investigated using semi-structured interviews, utilizing theoretical frameworks like identity theory, assimilation theory, and Homi K. Bhabha's idea of the third space and hybrid identity. The study finds that social media may lessen a sense of social isolation by enabling users to stay in touch with friends and family back home.... The study finds that social media may lessen a sense of social isolation by enabling users to stay in touch with friends and family back home. Nonetheless, some study participants convey feelings of liminality and partial acceptability from the Swedish and Somali communities. Social media helps younger users integrate more easily by allowing them to form cross-ethnic networks and negotiate their identities in the third space. On the other hand, language obstacles and the inability to embrace the hybridization of cultural identities hindered older individuals from being fully integrated into Swedish society. For the older individuals, we interpreted that this was a result of reduced engagement on Swedish social media platforms, reinforcing their connections to their Somali heritage. In conclusion, the study demonstrates the complex influence of social media on immigrant integration, which can be both beneficial and problematic based on personal experiences and age. (Less)
