Abstract
Motivations for social media use is a topic where there is currently a limited amount of research. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to study correlations between motivations for social media use, problematic use of social media services, mental well-being, and quality of life. Differences between those who identified themselves as women and men were also studied. Data collection was done by means of a survey. Recruiting was done by sending e-mails to current or former students at Malmö University and Dalarna University. 1015 valid responses were collected and used in the analyses. The analyses showed that there are associations of varying strength between the estimates of the different motivations for social media use,... (More)

The analyses showed that there are associations of varying strength between the estimates of the different motivations for social media use, problematic use of social media services, mental well-being, and quality of life. The most prominent correlations were those involving the motivational factor Escapism, which is meant to measure the extent to which social media services are used as an escape from reality, a way to manage one's emotions and a way to feel more positive emotions. There are statistically significant differences between women and men in the level of use of different social media services and in the estimates of the motivational factors. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
