This paper aims to identify and analyze the different types of models that these companies use in their product shoots, with a further emphasis on their body types. Aspects such as pose and gaze will also be relevant in trying to understand how these models contribute to the two companies’ visual identities. The methodological approach to this essay consists of Gillian Roses Four sites of meaning, which assisted with categorizing the process of visual analysis into a framework, in order to formally interpret the product pictures from the two companies. The essay also aims to understand what the use of these specific body types contribute to what is portrayed about the specific company, with help from theorists such as Roland Barthes and Joanne Entwistle. Through the theoretical and methodological framework, the results of the findings consisted of major differences in the usage of body types in order for the companies to be able to portray themselves alternatively, in the case of Très Bien, and normatively, in the case of Zalando. Theses stances used through the companies utilization of different body types existed in order for the two companies to be able to further perpetuate and cement their different places in the larger fashion industry, one being alternative in order to distance themselves from the norm, whilst the other being normative in order to perpetuate themselves as available and approachable.
