Vägran: en autoetnografisk utforskning av arbete och utmattning

- Abstract
- This essay is an investigation of labour and of exhaustion disorder (utmattningssyndrom). Through autoethnography in combination with testimonies from others with exhaustion disorder, and writing as research method, I explore the experience of labour – how it feels and its consequences. Using Donna Haraway’s concept of figuration, I investigate three themes connected to labour and exhaustion disorder: the superhuman, life and resistance. In chapter 1, The superhuman, I discuss a recurring narrative of the exhausted person as exceptionally hardworking or productive, and conclude that this makes it impossible for her to testify to the harmful nature of labour in general. In chapter 2, Life, I discuss wage labour as irreconcilable with human... (More)

In chapter 2, Life, I discuss wage labour as irreconcilable with human freedom since it devours our time and thereby our life. When labour leads to exhaustion, it comes to devour life as a whole; it eats away at our relationships, families, bodies, minds and futures. In chapter 3, Strike, I start out by discussing the public system objectifying and oppressing those with exhaustion disorder: the law, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency and the healthcare system. I end by suggesting four methods of resistance: counter definitions (motmärkning), refusal, utopian hope, and solidaric unproductivity. (Less)
