- Abstract
- This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences related to the integration process in the Swedish labor market of highly educated female refugees who fled from Syria to Sweden between the years of 2014 to 2021. Interviews were conducted with a total of seven women who, at the time of their interviews, were in different stages of integration into the labor market. Five of the seven women we interviewed have a university degree from Syria, the other two left Syria while they were still university students. The interviews that we held were semi-structured and conducted both in Swedish and Arabic. The findings of this study suggest that these refugees meet obstacles in the integration process of the Swedish labor market in the form of difficulties with the Swedish language, lack of a Swedish social network, and having their academic merits and previous experiences from Syria devalued in the Swedish work market. Once they have obtained a job, however, we found that they face challenges with preconceived notions about Arabic culture from both colleagues and their superiors, and also that many of them found meaningful social connections in the workplace which furthers their social integration in Sweden. Our findings are connected to the use of Bourdieu's theory of capital and the theory of structural and social integration. (Less)
