- Abstract
- This paper aims to analyse and discuss the events and treaty surrounding the marriage of Charles II, King of England, Scotland, and Ireland to Catherine of Braganza, the Infanta of Portugal using traditional economic theory of dowries and exchange. Using a hermeneutical approach, this paper investigates why the parties of this exchange acted in the way they did. Based theory stating that the purpose of a dowry for commoners was to ensure welfare for the bride and make beneficial connections for the family, this paper finds that in the case of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza, it might not be accurate to describe it as a dowry, but rather as a part of a larger exchange constituting an alliance.
