Abstract
The purpose of this master's thesis in practical theology, with a focus on hymnology, is to investigate how the life and environment of hymn writers influence the composition of contemporary hymn texts within the Church of Sweden. This is achieved through qualitative interviews with established hymn writers.
The selection criteria for the study included the hymn writer’s representation in the 1986 edition of the Swedish Hymnal or the hymn supplement "Hymns for the 21st Century," the ability to choose five of their hymns that are or have been in use, i.e., sung or have been sung and the willingness of the hymn writer to be interviewed. Additionally, the study aimed to include an equal number of male and female hymn writers.

Additionally, the study aimed to include an equal number of male and female hymn writers.
The interviews were based on some of the hymn writers' own hymn texts. Each hymn writer selected five hymns according to the following five criteria as the basis for the interview: early, later, easy to write, difficult to write, and close to the heart. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. The transcribed interviews, comprising over fifty pages of source material for the thesis, served as the basis for the analysis, which sought patterns and contexts based on what is striking and relevant in light of the study's purpose. The interview material was systematically and comprehensively coded and organized into themes. The study's results are illustrated with quotes. The analysis is permeated by my understanding of Palm's model for text interpretation and Eggehorn's definition of hymns.
A comprehensive review of the hymn's journey through the Church of Sweden's common hymnals and hymn supplements is provided to place contemporary hymns in a broader perspective and to highlight how contemporary times influence which hymns are written and used.
The life and environment of the hymn writer influence the hymns. This is demonstrated both by the illumination of the hymn's history in Sweden and the interviews with the established contemporary hymn writers. Palm's model for text interpretation in the analysis shows that all aspects influencing the text are interconnected and interdependent. The text interpretation model, with the slight modifications made in the thesis to apply to hymns – a genre where words and melody are intertwined – can be used by both the hymn writers’ and the hymn users’ interpretations of hymns.
(More)

Intervjuerna spelades in och transkriberades.
