(2024) VTVL01 20241Transport and Roads
- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less) - Abstract (Swedish)
- The shift towards more environmentally friendly means of transportation is a pivotal change that needs to be made, to save the environment. The congestion levels at stations have surged due to an ever-growing number of train passengers. The problem is that most stations in Sweden look the same as they were originally built, resulting in their inability to accommodate all additional travelers. In connection with increased congestion the comfort and overall enjoyment have reduced significantly. Besides the decline in comfort and satisfaction, the train operators are also impacted negatively. Higher congestion levels make it even more difficult to maintain the same level of service. Congestion is often caused due to most passengers choosing to use the same entrance when boarding. It encompasses that the only way to alleviate congestion is by spreading out the passengers evenly across all doors. One way of doing this is using behavior-changing screens. Using a survey, this study aims to identify how these screens could be designed to influence passengers' choices to avoid severe congestion during the boarding and alighting process.
The study's findings indicate that the most effective of the tested design alternatives to influence passengers' choices is the one with the little figure that gets filled in with different colors. (Less)
