- This study explores how counselors in healthcare experience and manage patients' difficult life situations, focusing on communication, strategies, and recovery. The role of a counselor is known to be emotionally demanding, and this study hypothesizes that counselors’ well-being may deteriorate if these emotional stressors are not effectively managed. To mitigate the risks of burnout and compassion fatigue, it is crucial for counselors to actively process and reflect on the emotions encountered in their work. The study employed semi-structured interviews with nine counselors working in various healthcare settings. Ariel R. Hochschild's theories of emotional labor were used to analyse the empirical data. The findings underscore the importance of counselors being aware of and managing their own reactions and emotions and the need for support to process these feelings effectively. The research also highlights the necessity of organizational support structures, such as external supervision and opportunities for wellness activities, to promote counselors’ health and well-being. The study emphasizes how emotional labor consciously and unconsciously impacts counselors' well-being. By addressing these factors, the study aims to prevent mental health issues among counselors and enhance their ability to perform their work effectively. (Less)
