Abstract
This small qualitative case study aimed to examine how professions in interprofessional teams define the role and specific competence of a healthcare social worker at a child habilitation center. I interviewed seven professional team members at one child habilitation center. Three are healthcare social workers, one is an occupational therapist, two are psychologists and one is a special needs educator. The empirical data has been analyzed using different theoretical concepts. When team members from other professions define the healthcare social worker role, they do so based on their experiences and conceptions of the role. The healthcare social workers themselves describe a broader area of expertise, which can be difficult to communicate... (More)

The empirical data has been analyzed using different theoretical concepts. When team members from other professions define the healthcare social worker role, they do so based on their experiences and conceptions of the role. The healthcare social workers themselves describe a broader area of expertise, which can be difficult to communicate to colleagues in the team. Also, the psychosocial interventions health care social workers carry out in child habilitation centers are difficult to define and measure. Therefore it might not be so easy to present any results based on one's specific competence. But perhaps the most important result is that professional identities, professional roles, and role boundaries, as well as the areas of responsibility and duties, are dynamic and need to be adapted when needs or other changes occur in the environment. Maybe the task of making one's expertise visible in an interprofessional team is a task that has been neglected by the healthcare social workers in the child habilitation center. (Less)
