Through in-depth semi-structured interviews with Syrian refugees residing in Cairo, this study examines their everyday lives, uncovering the multifaceted challenges they encounter and the various tactics they employ to deal with these obstacles. For this purpose, this study combines two theoretical approaches: Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of habitus and capital and Michel de Certeau’s theory of tactics and everyday practices. The findings reveal that the integration of Syrian refugees in Egypt is a complex process influenced by their everyday practices and the transformation of their habitus and capital, which together contribute to their sense of belonging. Importantly, the contribution of this paper is to broaden our understanding of integration dynamics in the Middle East beyond the traditional Global North-centric approach. (Less)
