BLOOM - The Holistic Kettle Solution

- Abstract
- The traditional water kettle, while functional, often struggles to adapt to the evolving needs of modern consumers and to integrate seamlessly into contemporary home environments. This thesis reimagines the kettle through a user-centric design approach, addressing limitations in usability and aligning with current and future consumer demands. Through observation, interviews, sketching, prototyping, and user testing, this project led to the creation of BLOOM, a holistic product solution that integrates water filtration and heating in a cohesive design for the modern kitchen.

BLOOM consists of three key elements: a glass vessel, a gravity-based filter, and an induction heating plate. The filter employs activated carbon and ion-exchange granules to remove contaminants and odors, offering a mindful filtering process directly into the vessel. Crafted from glass, the vessel visually highlights the purity of the water, and its shape intuitively indicates water levels, encouraging users to filter and heat only the necessary amount, supporting energy efficiency and conscious water use. A metal inlay enables compatibility with the induction heating plate. The plate’s sculptural shape and wooden material introduces an innovative aesthetic that allows the appliance to blend seamlessly into home interiors. Beyond its use for heating and filtration, the versatile vessel also functions as a carafe for cold beverages or as a teapot, extending its usability throughout the home and enriching everyday routines. Designed for user convenience, it can be easily cleaned by hand or in a dishwasher, ensuring effortless maintenance and supporting product care.
BLOOM demonstrates how user-centric innovation can bridge the gap between functionality and aesthetics, while challenging conventional kitchen appliance standards. By integrating advanced filtration with intuitive design, it offers a forward-thinking solution that extends possible use cases and addresses both current and long-term consumer needs in the home kitchen.
