Abstract (Swedish)
This mixed-method study focuses on risk factors that children in foster care bring into the
placements, the negative effects the risk factors have on the children´s development and
health and the need for them to be treated professionally. Factors included are, among
others, experiences from maltreatment, attachment problems, various forms of abuse, drug
use, criminality, or mental illness.
Our aim with this study is to investigate which challenges the social services found in the life,
background and behavior of the children who were placed in consultant-supported emergency
and foster homes in 2023 to give an indication of where society's efforts should be directed to
improve foster care.

Our aim with this study is to investigate which challenges the social services found in the life,
background and behavior of the children who were placed in consultant-supported emergency
and foster homes in 2023 to give an indication of where society's efforts should be directed to
improve foster care.
The data was gathered through the placement service SSIL where municipalities can request
private sector service providers for placement of individual cases. Information is provided by
the social handling officers to SSIL. Out of 2892 requests made and published in 2023 we found
1072 as relevant for our study.
Through literature search and document analysis we found risk factors which we recorded in
the statistical analysis program JAMOVI. We then proceeded with a quantitative content
analysis by measuring the frequency of the risk factors. This was conducted in Excel. The results
were thereafter analyzed through the theoretical frameworks of socioecological theory and the
attachment theory.
Our results show that a majority of the children face multiple risk factors. Furthermore we
identified the three most frequent risk factors mentioned by the Social Welfare offices were
domestic violence, child maltreatment and multiple breakdown of placements which are all
factors that are beyond the children´s own control but with effects that, if not dealt with
properly, could destroy the child´s life and future. (Less)
