Abstract
The global food system is a cause of the worldwide poly-crisis in climate change and ecological decay. Ecological food systems have been emerging to contest the ruinous food production model. This thesis explores one branch of ecological food production: urban farming. Guided by theories of access and transformative social innovation, the thesis builds on interviews conducted with actors constituting urban food systems. Findings show that farming innovations’ success relies on the support of surrounding agents in using diverse resources. This provides... (More)

Findings show that farming innovations’ success relies on the support of surrounding agents in using diverse resources. This provides farmers with economic stability and empowerment to pursue sustainability goals. Constrained by legal and policy barriers, urban farming innovations’ systemic impact is still to be seen, suggesting a need for greater collective involvement to drive sustainable food production.
