Abstract
This bachelor thesis explores the lack of LGBTQIA+ representation in last year‘s highest grossing movie; Barbie (2023). The aim of the paper is to analyze the movie through its textual, discursive and social practices by using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis as well as queertheory. I analyze the movie’s hegemonic power structures regarding gender and sexuality expressions, as well as its exclusionary effects. The thesis combines theories of queer, representational and feminist work in order to uncover the underlying ideologies and how it shapes the movie’s representation. It focuses, mainly, on two characters: Allan and Weird Barbie, and how these are attributed queerness through different semiotics and in what ways this... (More)

I come to the conclusion that (1) these characters are characterized as queer, (2) they suffer from that due to the movie’s hetero- and cisnormative core and (3) that the movie is constituted from and constitutes, as well as naturalize, postfeminist and neoliberal thought as part of mainstream film. Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
