- Abstract
- Fire investigations are used to analyze fire scenes, typically with the aim of finding the cause of the
fire or to understand the fire spread. Fire investigations can be the basis for the outcome of legal cases,
future accident preventative work or the outcome of financial disputes and can thus be important and
impactful. It is therefore of the outmost importance that they are conducted so that the conclusions are
sound. The use of fire dynamics, computational models and calculations could possibly provide an
increased credibility to the investigation.

increased credibility to the investigation.
This work aims to investigate the applicability of calculations and simulations for different groups that
have a connection to fire investigations. These are: fire departments, police, insurance companies,
consultants, and researchers. This is done through qualitative interviews with the goal of gaining an
increased understanding of how fire engineering calculations and simulations are used within these
groups today and how it could be used in their fire investigations in the future. The result from the
interviews presents a general picture of responders seldom using calculations/simulations in their
work, but a cautious positivity for future use. The main reasons for why they are not using it to a
greater extent is reportedly: lack of knowledge about the tools, time limitations and inherent issues
with the tools, such as limitations of the models and uncertainties in the input data.
Despite the challenges, examples of when calculations/simulations have been used and suggested
areas for implementation in the future were presented. For expert opinions in court cases, in situations
where the case is complex and/or cannot be solved using regular investigation techniques, cases
leading to severe consequences, or when there is a large financial incentive, simulations/calculations
could be beneficial. (Less)
