Abstract
There have been many studies on the Hungarian political climate already, but the majority of these approach it by only focusing on the state. Although this is important, the system contains other actors as well, such as various leftist oppositional associations. However, the non-classical leftist associations are still an under-researched topic within Hungary. There have been many studies on the Hungarian political climate already, but the majority of these approach it by only focusing on the state. Although this is important, the system contains other actors as well, such as various leftist oppositional associations. However, the non-classical leftist associations are still an under-researched topic within Hungary. This thesis aims to find out how do non-classical leftist associations create an alternative way of living within the authoritarian climate in Hungary. The study utilises ethnographic methodologies of observation and semi-structured interviews with participants of vital association. Additionally, these interviews are analysed through the lenses of Eugen Ehrlich’s Living Law and Antonio Gramsci’s Counter-Hegemony. The data analysed revealed that these associations create alternative ways of living through the extension of their members’ democratic rights, encouraging the creation of alternative political thought, mutual aid through welfare practices, and by envisioning new kinds of structures. This thesis contributes to the understanding of the Hungarian non-classical leftist associations’ efforts within an authoritarian climate. Additionally, the thesis contributes to the studies in field of sociology of law by researching new subjects and by combining living law with counter-hegemony. (Less)
