Allt går så fort – en kritisk fallstudie av svensk politisk ordning

- Abstract
- German sociologist Hartmut Rosa’s modernity theory of social acceleration argues that acceleration takes place in three arenas. Rosa claims that these are reinforced in a relationship that can not be broken by political interventions. Politics is reactive rather than proactive. With reactive politics the capacity of politics to steer societal development is eroded. The problem of order consists of creating a social structure where security can be guaranteed. The aim of this study was to investigate the tension between the increasing pace of change and the need for a stable order. Therefore, the paper investigated how Rosa’s theory of social acceleration challenges the political order in Sweden. By studying three actors of Swedish political... (More)

The aim of this study was to investigate the tension between the increasing pace of change and the need for a stable order. Therefore, the paper investigated how Rosa’s theory of social acceleration challenges the political order in Sweden. By studying three actors of Swedish political order: politicians, political parties and voters, four conclusions were drawn. First, politicians are challenged by acceleration through a decline in the quality of their policy evidence. Second, political parties are shifting from party to public democracy. Third, Swedish voters perceive democracy as time-consuming. Acceleration seems to generate an unsynchronized relationship between voters and politics. At last, Rosa’s sociological theory can, to some extent, be translated into a political science context. The concept of acceleration can be one of several tools in the political science toolbox.
