Unemployment, negative growth rates, and instability stretched far over and continuous to play a role in many countries' affairs, the aftermath of which can still be felt today. In Europe countries employed different measures in order to combat the problems brought on by the crisis. Theory demonstrates that countries that perceived more inclusive and effective institutions managed to circumvent the disastrous effects of the crisis and come out relatively unscathed, whilst
others did not. The last thing you want when building an inclusive institution, and specially during a time of crisis is corruption in those institutions. The aim of this paper has been to research just that, how corruption within institutions correlates with a slower, more dragging recovery from the crisis. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, findings illustrate a negative, albeit weak, correlation between corruption within institutions
and recovery from the crisis. Differences in anti-corruption plans, administrative & political reform, as well as an overall distrust in the government all proved to be explanatory factors to why some countries recovered better whilst others did not, as in the cases of Greece & Italy. (Less)
